Biltmore Estate North Carolina
The Biltmore Estate was built in 1895 by George Vanderbilt II,
son of the railroad, steamboat and enterprise pioneer William
Henry Vanderbilt. George was captivated by the beauty of the
Blue Ridge Mountains around Asheville and decided that he wanted
to build the Biltmore Estate as a sprawling country retreat for
his family and guests. Naming the estate "Bildt,” for the region
in Holland where the Vanderbilt family originated, and "more,"
for an old English term for upland rolling hills, the Biltmore
House was designed by Richard Morris Hunt. Frederick Law
Olmsted, known as the father of landscape architecture in the
United States, handled the design and layout of the surrounding
125,000 acres of gardens, forests and rolling pasture.
Today, the Biltmore Estate North Carolina is comprised of 8,000 acres, with the
French Broad River running directly through the property.
Biltmore was named a National Historic Landmark in 1964 and
remains America’s largest private residence. The Vanderbilt’s
only child, Cornelia Stuyvesant Vanderbilt, and her husband John
Amherst Cecil opened Biltmore to the public in 1930, and the
estate permanently opened in 1956. Biltmore Estate is a private,
family-owned company controlled by the son of Cornelia
Vanderbilt, John Cecile Jr. The company is proud of their self
sufficiency and status as one of few National Historic Landmarks
that receive no government grants and operate solely on private,
for profit funding.
Visitors can experience the luxurious life of the Vanderbilt
family by tasting wine from the Biltmore vineyards, stroll
through the Biltmore House and Gardens, and even take home
furnishings, building products, live plants and decorative
accessories to infuse your home with finery from the Biltmore
Estate. Biltmore features a 70,000 gallon indoor swimming pool,
bowling alley, two-story library, original Vanderbilt fine art,
furnishings and antiques, forced-air heating, and intercom
system within its 4 acres of 175,000 square feet. Masterfully
preserved, the Biltmore Estate includes 250 rooms, 35 reserved
for guest and family rooms, 43 bathrooms, 65 fireplaces, and
three kitchens.
A visit to the High Country cannot go without a visit to the
Biltmore Estate, North Carolina’s largest attraction drawing
more than 1 million visitors a year. Just a little over an hour
from Bear Den Campground and Big Bear Cabin, visiting the
Biltmore Estate is an easy and delightful day trip. Stroll
through the 75 acres of formal gardens, sip on award-winning
Biltmore Wine from the most visited winery in the United States,
or partake in one of the many outdoor activities like carriage
rides, horseback riding, river float trips, biking, hiking,
fly-fishing school, and Land Rover driving school. Of course
there are delectable treats and fine dinning to satisfy all
palates.
To access the estate’s wonderful activities, guided tours and
dinning, admission requires ticket purchase. Allow two hours to
tour the Biltmore House and try to plan your visit during a time
when Biltmore Asheville boasts festive colors. Christmas at the
Biltmore Estate is fantastic, complete with a 35 foot Christmas
tree and candlelight tour of the Biltmore House. In the fall,
you can experience the vibrant colors of the leaves and
specialty plants in the gardens. Festival of Flowers in the
spring is a must for gardening and flower enthusiasts.
