Blue Ridge Parkway
Known as “America’s Favorite Drive,” the Blue Ridge Parkway is
the most visited ‘park’ among America’s National Park System
drawing 20 million visitors a year. The iconic 469 miles of
asphalt stretch from the Shenandoah National Park and Skyline
Drive in Virginia to the Cherokee and the Cherohala Parkway in
North Carolina. Visitors can map their progress along the Blue
Ridge Parkway by taking note of the mileposts which demarcate
every mile of the Parkway, beginning in Virginia and increasing
in number as you travel south. The mileposts also indicate
recreational areas, hiking trails, overlooks, campgrounds and
picnic areas located directly on the Parkway.
Bear Den Campground and Big Bear Cabin are gloriously situated
in the heart of arguably the best section of the Blue Ridge
Parkway. Known as the High Country, the area that is
northwestern North Carolina is home to 125 miles of the Blue
Ridge Parkway. Bear Den Campground is located directly off of
the North Carolina Blue Ridge Parkway, which features some of
the most photographed and visited sections of the Blue Ridge
Parkway, including Moses Cone Manor, Linn Cove Viaduct, Doughton
Park, Linville Falls and many others.
The Blue Ridge Parkway, like other wonderful American amenities,
was instigated during the Great Depression as a public works
project. Taking 52 years to build, construction of the Blue
Ridge Parkway began and ended right here in the High Country!
Completion coincided with and at the engineering feat that is
the Linn Cove Viaduct in 1987. After much debate due to the
feared ecological impact the Blue Ridge Parkway would have on
Grandfather Mountain, an agreement was reached between Parkway
promoters, ecologists, Grandfather Mountain protectors and
engineers. To avoid cutting into Grandfather Mountain, Linn Cove
Viaduct was constructed in an s-shape around the curves and
boulders of the rugged High Country terrain. The result is a
bridge that ‘wraps’ around and hugs the mountain, a modern
engineering marvel of concrete, construction and steel. It is
the most complex concrete bridge ever built and now one of the
most photographed sections along the entire Parkway.
Located directly off of the Blue Ridge Parkway at Milepost
324.8, in the heart of the North Carolina Blue Ridge Parkway,
Bear Den Campground and Big Bear Cabin are only 20 miles south
of the Linn Cove Viaduct. For the best Camping Blue Ridge
Parkway Grandfather Mountain, Bear Den Campground offers
convenience, beauty and the ideal location to see exquisite
views, rolling meadows and rare and endangered plants and birds
of the High Country. Heller's Blazing Star, Azalea Vasei and
many others are flourishing around our Blue Ridge Parkway Cabins
and Blue Ridge Parkway Lodging. Rough Ridge Overlook Trail at
Milepost 305.5 is a great place to view plant life from
boardwalks without disturbing the terrain. Rare and endangered
birds also inhabit our section of the North Carolina Blue Ridge
Parkway. Peregrine Falcons, endangered Saw Whet, and of course
the iconic American Eagle are spotted frequently around
Grandfather Mountain.
Within 10 miles of Bear Den Campground and Big Bear Cabin are
numerous activities, breathtaking overlooks and amazing North
Carolina Hikes located directly off the Blue Ridge Parkway.
Linville Falls is situated at Milepost 316.3 and features a
visitor center and trails that lead to some of the most famous
waterfalls throughout the Blue Ridge Mountains. The Upper Falls
is accessed by the Linville Falls Trail and plunges 10-12 feet
while the Lower Falls plummets more than 80 feet into the
Linville Gorge below. The Lower Falls is viewed from the
Linville Gorge Trail. The accompanying Linville Gorge is a
masterpiece of nature. The deepest gorge east of the Mississippi
River, the Linville Gorge Wilderness is protected federally
protected and its 10,000 acres is protected by the US Forest
Service. You can also trek down into a mountain at Linville
Caverns, located off Mile Post 317.4. The attraction takes
visitors inside Humpback Mountain to see the natural work of
stalactites and stalagmites and cool streams with trout running
deep underground. The great thing about the Linville Caverns is
that at a constant temperature of 52 degrees, it is open 10
months out of the year!
The closest attractions to Bear Den Campground and arguably the
most culturally unique throughout all the Blue Ridge Parkway are
the Orchard at Altapass and Penland School of Crafts. The
Orchard at Altapass has a century long history and is located in
Spruce Pine NC, only 1 mile from Bear Den Campground. This North
Carolina Apple Orchard features music, hayrides, butterfly
gardens, craft demonstrations, nature trails, and The Orchard
Shop offers delectable goodies such as homemade fudge, honey,
apple butter, blueberry jam, cider, and of course, lots of
apples! The Penland School of Crafts is another historic
attraction that is dedicated to the preservation, education and
promotion of the art of craft. View or purchase the craft work
of students, teachers and resident crafters in the mediums of
pottery, sculpture, drawing, glassblowing, metalwork,
photography, printmaking, weaving and woodworking.

Village, located 3 miles west of Blue Ridge Parkway exit 334 in
Little Switzerland. Experience three original High Country mines
including the Bon Ami Mine. Use authentic mining equipment and

the Parkway at Milepost 331, the intersection of the Blue Ridge
Parkway and North Carolina Highway 226, the North Carolina
Minerals Museum is a great place for families. View gems of
North Carolina and learn about the importance of mining in High
Country by visiting the Museum of NC Minerals in Little
Switzerland NC. Bear Den Campground is the ideal Lodging Little
Switzerland NC. For the leaf enthusiasts that flock to the High
Country each Fall, Roan Mountain is a must-see. Prime leaf

on the weather. Along with the vibrant reds, oranges and yellows
of the leaves, black eyed Susans, butterfly weeds, milkweeds,
