The High Country literally abounds with fish and thus fishing
opportunities. Bear Den Campground is an oasis of 400 scenic
acres within the Pisgah National Forest. Trout Fishing Pisgah is
easily accessed from Bear Den as is NC Fly Fishing. Bear Den’s
location in the Pisgah National Forest, renowned for its fertile
fishing grounds, makes Bear Den Campground the perfect Cabin
Rental in Pisgah National Forest. Flowing just outside of Bear
Den Campground in Spruce Pine NC are Grassy Creek and the North
Toe River. Both of these rivers offer fabulous waters for trout
and fly fishing. In fact, Spruce Pine NC, in Mitchell County,
was recently designated a “Mountain Heritage Trout City.” This
designation presides over a 2.3 mile section of the North Toe
River, stretching from the Highway 226 Bridge to the US 19E
Bridge. Fishing enthusiasts who want to fish in Mountain
Heritage Trout Waters may purchase a 3-day license for $5,
however, this license is only valid for waters that are
designated as Mountain Heritage Trout Waters. You can be sure to
find the three trout species of the North Carolina Mountains,
Brown Trout, Rainbow Trout and Brook Trout, in the North Toe
River and Grassy Creek. Strict regulations for NC Fly Fishing
and Trout Fishing in North Carolina define fishing activities in the High
Country. Be sure to consult blue and yellow diamond-shaped signs
stating local fishing regulations as they can change for each
river.
The
North Toe River also flows in Avery County, which borders
Mitchell County and Spruce Pine to the north. Avery County is
also home to the Linville River with hatchery supported fishing.
Upper Wilson Creek Area, southwest of the Blue Ridge Parkway,
has wonderful natural trout waters in Avery and Caldwell
Counties. This area includes Harpers Creek Wilderness Study Area
and can be accessed from 221 at Grandmother Mountain. Turn onto
SR 1514 and follow to intersection with FS-192 and turn right on
FS-192. Wilson Creek is termed a "National Wild and Scenic
River" along its upper portions and is a popular fishing
destination in the High Country. Maps of Wilson Creek Area can
be purchased at area U.S. Forest Ranger stations or local gear
shops. Wilson Creek is open to year-round fishing and is managed
by North Carolina Wilderness Resource Commission’s Catch and
Release, Artificial Lures Only regulations. Wild Rainbow and
occasional Brook and Brown Trout are present in Wilson Creek.
Lost Cove Creek is another angler’s destination. Take SR-1514 to
intersection of FS-981, and then take another right onto FS-981
and follow to several trailheads for Lost Cove Creek. FS 981
turns into SR 1511 and intersects the Blue Ridge Parkway near
Linville. Lost Cove Creek is managed by NCWRC’s Catch and
Release, Fly-Fishing Only regulations. Lost Cove Creek flows
through the Lost Cove Wilderness Study Area and is one of the
most primitive and pristine in the Pisgah National Forest. Lost
Cove Creek boasts deep pools and steep, small falls which make
chest-waders a must. All three species of Trout Pisgah abound in
Lost Cove Creek though no fish may be harvested or possessed
from Lost Cove Creek.
Harper Creek Falls Pisgah National Forest NC is known not only
for its beautiful hikes but also for trout and fly fishing. Take
SR-1514 to FS-464 and turn right on FS-464. Follow to trailheads
for Harper Creek area. North and South Harper Creeks are managed
by NCWRC’s Wild Trout regulations. Like Lost Cove Creek, the
terrain surrounding the Harper Creeks is steep and rough. Large,
deep pools feature Brook, Brown and Rainbow Trout.
Like the other waters in the High Country, Harper Creek Falls is
open to fishing year-round. Four trout at least 7 inches long
may be harvested per angler per day. Andrews Creek, also in the
Upper Wilson Creek Area, features only brown trout but flows
through several open meadows and wildlife fields. Fish may not
be retained in this area though fishing is open year-round.
