Grandfather Mountain
At 5,964 feet, Grandfather Mountain is the highest peak in the Blue Ridge and has some of the oldest rock formations in the world. It is called Grandfather because of its unique profile which looks like an old man lying on his back, perhaps sleeping, perhaps staring at the blue High Country sky. Look for ‘Grandfather’s’ long beard and strong nose. The epicenter of all things outdoor in the High Country, Grandfather Mountain is located off of the Blue Ridge Parkway at Milepost 305 and features numerous hikes and day activities for the whole family. Bear Den Campground’s convenience to the Blue Ridge Parkway makes it the best option for a Grandfather Mountain campground or Lodging Near Grandfather Mountain.

For a thrilling ‘ride,’ take a walk across the Mile-High Swinging Bridge. The 220-foot suspension bridge sits atop Grandfather Mountain’s Linville Peak and spans an 80-foot chasm! Visitors can then visit wildlife habitats of seven animals native to the High Country. Grandfather has seven environmental habitats for black bears, river otters, cougars, bald eagles, golden eagles, and white-tailed deer. Unlike a traditional zoo, Grandfather Mountain did not have to bring in terrain to recreate a habitat. The animals live in their actual native habitat exactly as Grandfather Mountain created it to be!

Visitors to Grandfather Mountain North Carolina have 11 trails of varied difficulty to choose from that traverse through forests normally found in Canadian climates. Hikers should know that many of the trails use ladders and cables to climb sheer cliff faces. Hikers are also advised that Grandfather is home to 16 distinct natural ecosystems and that 70 endangered species are found on Grandfather Mountain NC, so veering off trails is strictly forbidden. Because of the sensitive and rare ecosystems of Grandfather, the United Nation named it a Biosphere Reserve.

Perhaps Grandfather’s most famous and cultural attraction is the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games. Held on the MacRae Meadows near Linville NC, the 54th Grandfather Mountain Highland Games will be held next from July 9-12, 2009. Grandfather Mountain Highland Games is a gathering of Scottish Clans to foster and propel interest in piping, drumming, athletic achievement, music, dancing and Gaelic culture. Included in the Grandfather Mountain Highland Games is the Bear Run, a five-mile foot race that climbs 1568 feet in elevation from the town of Linville to the top of Grandfather.

Another favorite time to visit Grandfather Mountain is the Fall when visitors behold the exquisite beauty of the High Country, when the trees adorn themselves in every sunset color. Bear Den Campground is one of very few Campgrounds Near Grandfather Mountain and offers the ideal lodging for Highland Games Grandfather Mountain. If you are looking for Camping Blue Ridge Parkway Grandfather Mountain, look no further than Bear Den Campground and its premier proximity to all attractions of the High Country.
