Linville Caverns NC
Linville Caverns is one of the most popular North Carolina Caves
and is North Carolina’s only cavern. Contrary to popular belief,
there is a difference between a cave and a cavern! A cave is any
large cavity in which some portion of it does not receive
sunlight. A cavern is a type of cave that is naturally formed in
soluble rock with the ability to grow speleothems such as
stalactites and stalagmites. Thus, any cavern is a cave, but not
every cave is a cavern.
Linville Caverns NC is located inside of Humpback Mountain below
the Blue Ridge Escarpment in Linville Valley, south of Linville
North Carolina and north of Marion on US 221. These North
Carolina Caverns were first discovered nearly 200 years ago by a
curious fisherman trying to understand how fish swam managed to
swim in and out of the mountain. During the Civil War, deserters
from both sides used Linville Caverns as a hideout, and in 1939,
John Q. Gilkey opened Linville Caverns commercially. Linville
Caverns is a spectacular display of natural wonder. Mineral
deposits like stalactites (pointed formations hanging from the
cavern ceiling) and stalagmites (thicker, blunter formations
from the ground) continue their archaic formation. The caverns
are a result of water and carbon dioxide combining to dissolve
the limestone and dolomite of Humpback Mountain.
Linville Caverns offers North Carolina’s only fully underground
trail and the only caverns open to the public. Visitors can
expect to see hibernating Easter Pipistrelle Bats, in addition
to the stalactites, hanging from the ceiling during the winter
and early spring. Guided tours leave from the welcome center and
gift shop every 10-15 minutes and last approximately 30-40
minutes. Perhaps one of the best features of Linville Caverns is
that it is one of the High Country’s only year-round
attractions! Due to the constant 52 degrees temperature inside
the caverns, Linville Caverns operates daily from March through
November and on weekends from December through February. Hours
change according to the month so be sure to check the Linville
Caverns official schedule. Wheelchair accessible in all but two
areas of the caverns, the cost is low ($6 per person and under)
and the fascination high! Take the whole family to experience
the history and beauty of Linville Caverns NC.
Located very close to Linville NC and Linville Gorge, Linville
Caverns is just 15 minutes from Bear Den Campground and Big Bear
Cabin!
